Hikaru Noguchi was born in Tokyo, Japan. After studying graphic design at art college in Tokyo, she moved to London to study textile and knit design. She started her own knitting studio in London in 1993, creating a knitted accessories collection that has been sold in Saks Fifth Ave, Barney’s, and other well-known retailers during the 90s.

After moving to South Africa, she concentrated on working with more natural fibers, like mohair and wool, and experienced a totally different culture of consumerism, handling of products, and recycling. She credits her friend Rachel Matthew, artist, author, and philosopher who uses darning and knitting as her art medium, for introducing her in the early 2010’x to this wonderful art form. Since then, Hikaru has developed her own styles, techniques, and tools for mending and darning. Hikaru currently lives in Tokyo and incorporates the great history of Japanese textiles, such as Sashiko and other Japanese needle craftwork into her own pieces.
